Nonprofit Resources

As a nonprofit startup the Accelerated Cure Project team has found it isn't always easy to figure out how to get things going. As we develop processes and documents, or find valuable resources, we'll post them here.

Documents We Have Written

Feel free to copy and modify the documents we have written to suit your own organization's needs.

Publications We Found Useful

  • How to Form a Nonprofit Corporation - this book is a complete guide to almost everything you need to know about nonprofits. Even if you intend to use a lawyer to set up your corporation (which we recommend), this book will educate you on all the points you will need to understand.
  • Grassroots Fundraising Journal - this every-two-months journal provides some of the best articles on how to operate a nonprofit out there. Not only do they discuss basic strategies, but also specific tactics that you can implement right away given with concrete examples.
  • The Chronicle of Philanthropy - this is the nonprofit industry "trade rag." It is a good way to keep up on big issues affecting nonprofits and general industry gossip. Not as useful as other publications in our opinion, but a must read for anyone running a nonprofit.
  • Books from Chardon Press - mostly collections of articles from Grassroots Fundraising Journal, these books are an excellent way to get started learning what needs to happen in a nonprofit organization.

Organizations We Found Useful

  • Network for Good - this organization has many services for nonprofits. The one we like the most is the subsidized credit card processing. They allow you to set up an account to take credit cards and they charge a percent with no transaction fee, so your nonprofit gets more than through commercial credit card processing agencies.
  • Authorize.Net - this is another credit card processing company with reasonable fees and a decent programming gateway which can allow you to integrate credit card transactions on your web pages. They also have a manual interface for processing international and repeating transactions (in addition to regular transactions), which Network For Good can't do.
  • The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana Univerisity - Fundraising for Small Nonprofits is one of the few courses we have encountered which is specifically geared toward development professionals who work in a one or two person development office of a small nonprofit. It was very well done. The materials were great. Lots of hands on experience and advice was presented as opposed to just high level theorizing. After three days, we felt we walked out with a concrete plan of attack for our organization and lots of helpful tips for how to actually get things done.

Other Useful Items

  • Correct Spelling of Nonprofit - there is no hyphen in the American spelling of "nonprofit," the hyphenated version is used in the United Kingdom. Fundraising can be spelled with or without the hyphen.
